Winter is the season when we are usually less active. It might be because of the cold weather, short days, holiday’s foods or something completely different, but weight gaining seems to be inevitable. Even though it is much harder to keep yourself motivated to workout and eat healthy during the short and cold winter days, we have some tips and tricks you can use to stay in shape.
Eat healthy snacks
The biggest problem is the high-fat food that we consume during the winter holidays. We know that mashed potatoes and fat meats are tempting during winter. In fact, it is in our DNA to stack up on fats during winter so we can survive harsh weather. But long gone are those primal days of humans and we can eat healthily and still survive in such conditions.
The best way to go about this is to eat low-fat meats, soups and a lot of salads. If you are going to some holiday event and you know there won’t be any healthy food, fill up your stomach with salad or broth-based soup at home. This way you will be completely full and won’t be focusing on getting stuffed with roasted pork or mashed potatoes. Also, if you are craving for sweets, the perfect solution is pumpkin pie. It is healthier and lower in calories than desserts like cheesecake.
Drink plenty of water or tea
Drinks, like water, tea, natural fruit juices, etc. are good for your health during the whole year and especially during the winter. Researchers have found that the majority of people in America are chronically dehydrated and dehydration is often mistaken for hunger. During winter our bodies use much more energy to keep everything running smoothly and need a lot more liquids and solids.
Now we are not telling you to drink energy drinks, alcohol or sugar-rich drinks to keep yourself hydrated. In fact, these drinks will have a completely opposite effect on your body and you will gain even more weight. Instead, have a glass of water always in your hand. Tea and other warm drinks are also perfect for the cold winter weather. You will warm yourself up as well as be hydrated.
Make a workout plan and stick to it
Sticking to your workout plan is hard and for someone virtually impossible once the winter weather kicks in. Snowy days and ice on the roads make outdoor workouts impossible and going to the gym in this weather is the last thing anyone wants to do. Sadly, there is no way around it. Snow will always be there and you won’t be able to go for a run until the spring returns.
The key is to make workouts a little bit easier on yourself. Build a plan and make a schedule for all your workouts. Treat your every workout as business appointments that you can’t miss. Also, buy additional gym equipment to help you shed those pounds. Shapewear pieces like slimming waist cinchers are ideal for fast fat burning. They will not only help you lose weight faster, but will also help you hide your stomach if you are self-conscious about it.
Increase protein intake
A high-protein diet may help you reduce your calorie intake by fooling your brain that you have eaten more than with low-protein diet. Reducing your calorie intake is key to losing weight and this is the perfect solution that helps you lose some fat without being constantly hungry.
Start eating lean protein foods instead of high-fat meats and dairy products. For breakfast consider using low-fat milk and maybe skip on the whole egg and use only egg whites. Also, beans, fish, nuts, and chicken breast are all great sources of lean protein and are a perfect after workout meal.
Go out and catch some sunlight
Lastly, it is very important to go out on a daily basis. We know that the days are short and cold in the winter, but even a short walk in the sunlight will boost your serotonin levels making you instantly more energized and less prone to mood swings. Serotonin is a brain chemical that is directly linked to our happiness level and feeling of fullness. So, use every chance you have to go for a walk by yourself or with a friend. You will see immediate changes for the better in your mood.
And that is it. As you can see, taking a proper care of your weight during the winter isn’t as such a hard thing as you might think so. With our tips, you will have no trouble maintaining your slim summer physique and even lose some pounds if you have gained some. Just remember to control your food intake and participate in different outdoor activities as much as possible.
